The Art of Drag Seminar was held for the first time at Oslo Metropolitan University on September 27, in the Main Auditorium of Andrea Arntzen’s House – a building that usually hosts the nursing program at OsloMet, but which also houses the drama and theatre education programs with their rehearsal spaces and black boxes.
The first lecturer at The Art of Drag Seminar was a well-known figure in both the Norwegian drag and contemporary dance scenes: Shlomi Ruimi, also known as Mimi Devine, who presented the lecture “Drag, Dance and Identity.” The lecture explored Ruimi’s work with dance and drag as a way of engaging with personal stories.

Shlomi Ruimi has a background in dance and has worked as a dancer and choreographer for, among others, the Berlin Ballett Komische Oper, Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, Bat-Dor Company, and Norway’s national contemporary dance company, Carte Blanche, based in Bergen. In addition, he has studied hair and makeup at the Adam and Eva School, and currently works as a hairdresser and makeup artist. He was also active in the ballroom scene around 2020 before starting with drag. In 2024, Shlomi Ruimi reached the semifinals of Norway’s Got Talent.
In the lecture “Drag, Dance and Identity,” he shared how he has used drag to express personal stories, beginning with the creation of Mimi Devine. Mimi Devine was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Ruimi used social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram as his stage. There, he shared humorous and satirical videos as Mimi Devine, portraying the life of a glamorous housewife balancing children and a hectic daily life. Among other things, viewers could experience Mimi Devine’s “cures” for those struggling with the well-known pandemic phenomenon, pa-rent-ing. The Mimi Devine profile became a great success, and after the lockdown, Shlomi went on to develop several large-scale projects.
Shlomi Ruimi wanted to “… bring the art of drag to big stages, not just clubs and to people who drink,” as he put it himself, and thus produced the show “All About Mimi.” In this performance, he collaborated with dancers from Norway’s ballroom community, aiming to create a production where queer expression could take center stage.
Through the drag persona Mimi Devine, Ruimi told honest and vulnerable stories using humor, sarcasm, and laughter – combined with dance, drag, and theatre. He describes Mimi Devine as a character living a glamorous life as a married mother of two.
The production was staged at several major venues, including Dansens Hus and Oslo Nye Teater in Oslo, Kilden in Kristiansand, Rosendal Teater in Trondheim, Buen Kulturhus in Mandal, and Kulturhuset in Bergen. In other words, through his performance and drag persona, Shlomi brought queer culture and expression to large stages across Norway.
In 2023, Shlomi Ruimi produced his second show, “Mimi Devine Spilling the T on the D,” which was performed at venues such as Ole Bull Scene in Bergen and SALT Art & Music in connection with Oslo Drag Festival. This time, the performance addressed an even more personal and sensitive theme. Ruimi’s life had taken a new turn, and as Mimi Devine, he shared his experience of going through a divorce. He explained that developing this personal story into a stage performance – and presenting it publicly – helped him process the experience. This illustrates how life often inspires drag, and how drag, in turn, inspires life.
He describes Mimi as an antihero, focused on revealing truths about reality as it is – through drag and dance. Mimi Devine draws from everyday situations but dresses them up in glitter and glamour. In doing so, she becomes a character that audiences can easily relate to, even if they have no prior experience with drag. Her signature combination of humor, sarcasm, and elegance allows drag to reach new audiences and invites them to laugh along with her. This approach helps lift drag art beyond the club scene and gradually make it more accessible to the general public.
Through his work, Shlomi Ruimi shows how he stitches the personal into the artistic. His practice challenges the boundaries between the private and the performative, opening space for reflection on identity, gender, and belonging. With Mimi Devine, he has created a character who both entertains and moves her audience – a figure who, with glitter, humor, and vulnerability, reminds us that drag is not only about transformation, but also about finding truth within the performance.

The Art of Drag Seminar ble gjennomført for første gang ved Oslo Metropolitan Universitet den 27. september, i Store auditorium i Andrea Arntzens hus – et bygg som vanligvis huser sykepleierutdanningen ved OsloMet, men hvor også drama- og teaterutdanningen har sine prøvesaler og black boxer.
Den første foredragsholderen på The Art of Drag Seminar var en kjent skikkelse i både det norske dragmiljøet og samtidsdansmiljøet, nemlig Shlomi Ruimi, også kjent som Mimi Devine, som holdt foredraget «Drag, Dance and Identity». Foredraget handlet om Shlomi Ruimis arbeid med dans og drag i møte med personlige historier.
Shlomi Ruimi har bakgrunn fra dans, og har jobbet som danser og koreograf for blant annet Berlin Ballett Komische Oper, Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, Bat-Dor Company og Norges nasjonale kompani for samtidsdans, Carte Blanche, som holder til i Bergen. I tillegg har han studert sminke og hår ved Adam og Eva-skolen, og jobber for tiden som frisør og makeupartist. Han har også bakgrunn fra ballroom-miljøet før han startet med drag. I 2024 kom Shlomi Ruimi til semifinalen i Norske Talenter.
I foredraget «Drag, Dance and Identity» forteller han om hvordan han har brukt drag til å formidle personlige historier, og begynner med å fortelle hvordan Mimi Devine ble til. Mimi Devine ble skapt under koronapandemien, da han brukte sosiale medier som TikTok og Instagram som sin scene. Her delte Shlomi humoristiske og satiriske videoer som Mimi Devine – om hvordan det var å være husmor med barn kombinert med et hektisk liv. Blant annet kan man oppleve Mimi Devines «kurer» dersom man slet med den velkjente pandemien pa-rent-ing. Profilen til Mimi Devine fikk stor suksess, og Shlomi igangsatte også flere større prosjekter etter nedstengningen.
Shlomi Ruimi ønsket å «… bring the art of drag to big stages, not just clubs and to people who drink», som han sier selv, og produserte dermed showet “All About Mimi.” I denne forestillingen hadde han med seg dansere fra ballroom-miljøet i Norge og ønsket å skape en forestilling der det skeive uttrykket fikk ta plass.
Gjennom dragkarakteren Mimi Devine fortalte Shlomi Ruimi ekte og sårbare historier, med bruk av humor, sarkasme og latter – i tillegg til dans, drag og teater. Han beskriver Mimi Devine som en karakter som lever et glamorøst liv som gift tobarnsmor.
Forestillingen ble satt opp på blant annet Dansens Hus og Oslo Nye Teater i Oslo, Kilden i Kristiansand, Rosendal Teater i Trondheim, Buen kulturhus i Mandal og Kulturhuset i Bergen. Med andre ord delte Shlomi gjennom sin forestilling og dragkarakter skeiv kultur og skeive uttrykk på store scener over hele Norge.

Han beskriver Mimi som en antihelt, opptatt av å formidle sannheter om virkeligheten slik den er – gjennom drag og dans. Mimi Devine tar utgangspunkt i hverdagslige situasjoner, men kler dem i glitter og glamour. Slik skaper hun en karakter som publikum lett kan kjenne seg igjen i, selv om de ikke har erfaring med drag fra før. Hennes signatur er kombinasjonen av humor, sarkasme og eleganse, som åpner for at drag kan nå ut til et nytt publikum og invitere dem til å le sammen med henne. Denne tilnærmingen kan bidra til å løfte dragkunsten ut av klubbscenen og gradvis gjøre den mer allment tilgjengelig.
Gjennom sitt arbeid viser Shlomi Ruimi hvordan han syr det personlig inn i kunsten. Hans kunstnerskap utfordrer grensene mellom det private og det performative, og åpner for refleksjon rundt identitet, kjønn og tilhørighet. Med Mimi Devine har han skapt en karakter som både underholder og berører – en figur som med glitter, humor og sårbarhet minner oss om at drag ikke bare handler om transformasjon, men også om å finne sannhet i det iscenesatte.
